Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive in Pennsylvania in 2026?
If your car insurance went up a lot over the last few years, you’re definitely not the only one.
For a while, auto insurance companies were dealing with a pretty rough combination of higher repair costs, parts shortages, rising labor costs, and longer repair times. All of that made claims more expensive, and those higher costs eventually showed up in customer premiums.
The interesting part is that the market is starting to change.
At PolicyVisor, we’ve recently seen a number of insurance companies become more competitive again. In some cases, we’re seeing premiums come down noticeably.
The problem is that a lot of drivers are still paying rates that were established during a much harder insurance market.
If you haven’t reviewed your policy in the last two or three years, there’s a good chance it’s worth taking another look.
Why Did Car Insurance Rates Go Up So Much?
A few things happened at the same time.
First, vehicle parts became more expensive and, in many cases, harder to get.
A repair that might have taken a few days in the past could suddenly take a few weeks because a shop was waiting on a part. If the insurance company is also paying for a rental car during that time, the total cost of the claim goes up even more.
Labor costs went up too.
Cars are also more complicated than they used to be. A relatively minor accident can involve cameras, sensors, radar systems, and other technology that may need to be replaced or recalibrated.
Something as simple as a bumper or windshield can cost a lot more to repair than people expect.
When insurance companies started paying more on claims, they had to raise premiums to keep up.
The Market Is Starting to Improve
This is where things get a little more encouraging.
We’re now seeing several carriers become more aggressive with pricing again.
That doesn’t mean every company is lowering rates, and it doesn’t mean every driver is going to save money.
But it does mean the market today is different than it was a couple of years ago.
And that matters.
A policy you bought or renewed during the hardest part of the market may still be priced as if those conditions haven’t changed much.
Meanwhile, another carrier may now be willing to insure the exact same household for less.
A Lot of People Are Still Paying “Hard Market” Rates
This is something we’re seeing pretty regularly at PolicyVisor.
Someone calls us because their auto insurance has gone up over the last few years. They haven’t had any major accidents or tickets. Nothing has really changed, but the premium just kept climbing.
In many cases, they simply stayed with the same company and kept renewing.
There’s nothing wrong with that. Loyalty can be a good thing.
But insurance companies don’t all raise and lower their rates at the same time.
One company may still be expensive while another has decided it wants more business in Pennsylvania and has become much more competitive.
That’s why reviewing your insurance every few years can make sense.
If You Haven’t Shopped in Two or Three Years, It May Be Worth It
I don’t think people need to switch insurance companies every year.
In fact, sometimes we review someone’s policy and tell them they’re already in a good spot.
But if your premiums have increased significantly and you haven’t compared options in a few years, there may be savings available that simply weren’t there before.
The important thing is to make sure you’re comparing the right things.
A cheaper policy isn’t necessarily a better policy.
When we review auto insurance, we look at things like:
- Liability limits
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
- Full tort vs. limited tort
- Comprehensive and collision coverage
- Deductibles
- Rental reimbursement
- Roadside assistance
- Home and auto discounts
Sometimes a quote looks much cheaper because the coverage is worse.
That’s not really a savings.
The goal should be to find a better value, not just the lowest possible price.

Why Working With an Independent Agency Can Help
One advantage of working with an independent agency is that we can look at more than one insurance company.
Different carriers want different types of customers at different times.
One company may be very competitive for a family with multiple vehicles. Another may really like home and auto bundles. Another may price better for someone with a long, clean insurance history.
There really isn’t one company that is always the cheapest.
At PolicyVisor, we can compare multiple carriers and see where the market is today.
That makes a lot more sense than assuming the company that was competitive three years ago is still the best option now.
Should You Always Switch if You Find a Lower Price?
No.
There are plenty of reasons to stay where you are.
Maybe the savings aren’t significant enough. Maybe the coverage is better with your current company. Maybe you’re already getting a very competitive rate.
We’re completely comfortable telling someone that.
The point of reviewing your insurance isn’t to force a change.
It’s to know whether what you’re paying still makes sense.
How Often Should You Review Your Auto Insurance?
For most people, every couple of years is a reasonable place to start.
You may also want to review it sooner if you:
- Add a new driver
- Add or remove a vehicle
- Buy a home
- Move
- Get married
- See a large renewal increase
- Pay off a vehicle
- Change how much you drive
Insurance is one of those things that’s easy to put on autopilot.
But every once in a while, it’s worth checking to make sure the policy you have still fits your situation and the current market.
Is Car Insurance Getting Cheaper in Pennsylvania?
For some drivers, yes.
We are seeing more competitive pricing than we were during the hardest part of the market.
That doesn’t mean rates are suddenly going back to where they were years ago. Repair costs are still high, and insurance companies are still paying more on claims than they used to.
But there are definitely more opportunities than there were a couple of years ago.
If you haven’t reviewed your policy since rates started climbing, this may be a good time to do it.
